A fun arena game despite its flaws
Have you ever wanted to know how it feels to become popular? Popular Wars is here to let you live that fantasy. Popular Wars is an action game where players must run through the arena and collect other people in order to win. In this game, players must compete with other players to become the most popular person on the map and get the most followers of out of everyone. You can also try to eliminate other players to become the last man standing and claim victory.
Graphics and Gameplay
The game is in 3D which makes it look blocky and cute. The style it's in is very simplistic and whether that’s a positive or negative is up to the player. It’s definitely cute and adorable, but the simplicity of the graphics does land it squarely on uncanny valley territory. It can also be a bit difficult to distinguish what items can be moved and which are stationary. Ultimately, though, the graphics are serviceable for what the game is trying to achieve.
The gameplay is similar to games like Crowd City. As mentioned above you must gather the most followers out of everyone on the arena. You collect followers by controlling your character and getting them close to white characters. When you get close enough, they adopt your character’s color scheme and become part of your posse. They will follow you around as a mob and with their help, you’ll be able to topple structures to get to more areas faster and easier. A large mob is important, of course, but as you grow, you do become slower and more prone to losing followers. If you let another player get close to you, they might steal your followers. You can do that to your opponents, too, of course, so it’s important to maintain a good balance between speed and size.
Problematic Aspects
This game is a ton of fun, but there are two aspects of the game that really stops it from being the phenomenon that it could be. Those two aspects are the lagging problem and the ads. This game is very prone to lagging which is a very critical problem since this game plays in real-time and is incredibly fast-paced. One lagging spell might cost you your victory.
The other problem this game suffers from is the number of ads. This isn’t as big of a problem since the ads usually appear at the end of a match, but there are ads at the bottom of the screen, and accidentally clicking on them might open up a new app and remove you from the game. This doesn’t happen often, but since it does affect gameplay, it’s still worth mentioning.
Fun, But Problematic
Popular Wars is a lot of fun to play. It’s not tedious and has high replay value. Still, it does have some problematic aspects that might cause people to uninstall it like the lagging and ads. However, the game is still very playable despite these issues and is worth a try, at the very least.
